Argyris Argyrou puts his money where his mouth is – and it’s a big mouth
Argyris Argyrou who plays under the names “polpolpol” and “Crazy Cypriot” is a noisy young man. If you like to play poker in peace and quiet, then hope you never land on a table with Argyris Argyrou.
He is one of the most entertaining characters to have emerged in recent years. He didn’t win the EPT Baden event (he came 10th, good for $24k), but he was the most memorable player there – his constant stream of observations and banter amused onlookers and earned him a reputation as one of the most noticeable new characters on the scene. One observer described his verbals as a “relentless stream of non-abusive chatter.” Yes – this guy sure can talk.
You’d be wrong, however, to think Argyrou’s mouthiness masks any poker shortcomings. Far from it – he’s racked up big tournament winnings on PokerStars since the start of 2005.
Argyrou plays as “polpolpol” on PokerStars and “Crazy Cypriot” on Party, so watch out for him. His biggest single win came in a World Championship of Online Poker (WCOOP) event on PokerStars, when he took third place and $119,118. He came fourth in a field of 5,061 to take $59k in Party’s $200 buy-in Sunday Million tournament too.
As you might expect of a player with such a talkative personality, “Crazy Cypriot” is a loose-aggressive player, prone to volatile periods of play and unexpected raises. That makes him a dangerous opponent, particularly as he’s capable of unnerving nervous adversaries with his banter, too.
Despite his success at the poker table “Crazy Cypriot” hasn’t given up the day job yet – he’s a refuse recycling manager back home in Cyprus. Rubbish may be his specialist subject, but he’s far from it with the cards.
