I told a friend in January I just have a feeling that I’ll run badly in the other events, but pull something out for the main. And it’s happened!
The UK pro is looking to make amends for his WSOP agony of 2008….
He was a 16/1 long shot to win the 2009 WSOP Main Event but just making the final table was a tremendous achievement by James Akenhead.
The UK pro has long been touted as one of the best tournament players to come from these shores and now he has proved it on the biggest stage of all.
Akenhead came agonisingly close to a bracelet in 2008 when making it to heads-up play with Grant Hinkle in the $1,500 NLH event.
But unfortunately for him his A-K couldn’t win a race against Hinkle’s 10-4 to leave him with 2nd place and $520,219.
In 2009, however, me made amends.
“It’s like a dream,” he said. “I told a friend in January I just have a feeling that I’ll run badly in the other events, but pull something out for the main. And it’s happened!”
One things for sure – he had some of the loudest support from the rail, which he says was a huge confidence booster in the run-in to the November Nine.
“The support’s been amazing,” he said. “I feel sorry for some of the guys out there, they would win a hand and not even get a clap. The great support I got really helped.”
Well done, James – the whole of the UK poker community cheered you on from home as well.
