Day 1A of the Main Event is Done and Dusted. Who Survived and Who Went Busto?

By Hugo Martin 4 July 2008

Let the carnage begin! The big dance is underway and the first day of the WSOP Main Event is tucked away into the books. 1,297 runners stepped up to the plate which is ten more players than last year’s day 1A.

Amongst the first day casualties are some big names including David Benyamine, his girlfriend Erica Schoenberg, Eli Elezra, Vanessa Selbst, Tom “durrr” Dwan, Dave “Devilfish” Ulliot, Freddy Deeb, Phil 'OMGClayAiken' Galfond, Roland De Wolfe, Kevin 'BeL0WaB0Ve' Saul, Chris “Moorman1” Moorman, Dan Harrington, Gavin Smith, Katja Thater, Luca Pagano and Berry Johnston.

Also out are Cardrunners’ Andrew Wiggins, Taylor 'Green Plastic' Caby, Eric Liu – will they have videos of their bustouts on the site?

Day 1A’s chip leader is one Mark Garner who has amassed 205,000 chips. Notable names still in are Brandon Adams ( 2nd in chips with 170,000), Kido Pham, Mark Vos, Jon 'Pearljammer' Turner, Svetlana Gromenkova (winner of this year’s Ladies Event), Chau Giang, Darrell 'Gigabet' Dicken, Maya Antonius, Joe “The Elegance” Beevers, Anna Wroblewski, Woody Deck, Hasan Habib, Jason Lester, Michael Craig, Vince Van Patten, Ben Roberts, Billy Baxter, Noah Boeken, John Hennigan, Dario Alioto, Gabe Thaler, Jimmy "gobboboy" Fricke, Paul Wasicka, Bill Gazes, Bobby Baldwin, Scotty Nguyen, Barry Greenstein, Thomas Wahlroos and Jeff 'Yellowsub' Williams.

The first knockout came after 12 minutes of play (surprisingly slow, I would’ve taken the under on that) when on a raggy board of 2-6-3 two players stuck a load of raises in until they were both all-in. KK vs JJ was the coup once they were on their backs with the inevitable Jack on the river to make the first bustout a 2-outer bad beat.

One coup that caught the eye was between Maya Antonius and some random player in late position who made it 1,200 to go. Patrik’s missus called from the big blind and the flop came down Ts 3h 2s. Maya check-calls when the LP player bets. Same action on the turn which bought the Qs. The river was the 9d and Maya Antonius checked once again. Her opponent now went all-in and Maya insta-called with Ks 3s. Nice hand Mrs. Antonius, I guess when you’re married to one of the world’s top players you’re going to pick up the odd play or two.
