Neil Channing: The Sunderland Londoner

The REAL story behind the mysterious 'Sunderland Man Wins Irish Open' press release confusing our sponsored player's London address with a city 300 miles away...

"'Oh! He knows me well, he'll know all this stuff' said a happy Neil, filling in the bare minimum (his home address) and gladly seeing the last of the form - time to settle down to some final table action!"

Upon sitting down at the TV table of the Irish Open 2008 with a bit of a short stack, butterflies and a desire to get dug into the game, Neil Channing was fairly disinterested in a form put under his nose by a member of the crew.

The form was provided by the event organizers to get as much information as possible about each player to provide to the commentators.

‘Who’s the commentator?’ asked Neil, hoping this would be one of his many poker comrades who knew him well enough to get him out of any unnecessary paperwork and let him play as many hands as possible at the TV table.

‘Jesse May’.

A smile quickly formed on Channing’s face.

‘Oh! He knows me well, he’ll know all this stuff’ said a happy Neil, filling in the bare minimum (his home address) and gladly seeing the last of the form – time to settle down to turning that short stack into a chip lead!

Now, Neil Channing is a Reading born lad who these days lives very close to his favourite casino – the Vic. This Edgware Road venue is a short walk away from Neil’s Sutherland Road abode in charming Maida Vale.

In the heat of the moment, a befuzzled announcer handed this earlier form at the final table introduced the chip leader as ‘Neil Channing from Sunderland’ in a simple misreading of Neil’s address.

This blunder, going uncorrected by an indifferent Channing, ended up being quoted in numerous press releases circulated to the poker media on Monday evening.

This press release was of course immediately reprinted by various websites and publications creating a general belief amongst those who do not know Neil that he is a Black Cat.

Though the iconic red poker verdict shirt could be taken to associate Neil to Sunderland, we are proud to announce that Neil only supports one team – Poker Verdict!

Despite being from Reading we all see Neil as an honorary Londoner, with the accent, abode and Vic addiction to match – so from here on in, Neil Channing will be fondly known by his Poker Verdict friends as The Sunderland Londoner…
