"Jeff continues to work in IT sales despite his string of high stakes results"
Hailing from San Antonio, Texas, 29-year-old Jeff Gray aka “Jeffbeesdat” has been tearing up MTTs on PokerStars for the past twelve months.
He has been particularly successful in the PokerStars Sunday million tournament – cashing for over $110,000 in this tournament between May and June of this year. These results have been backed up by other notable results on PokerStars: 4th in the $200 rebuy (known to be one of the toughest tournaments online) for $15,000, 4th in the $100 rebuy for $8,000, and qualifying for a European Poker Tour seat package worth $14,150.
Jeff’s figures for high stakes PokerStars tournaments are astonishing, running at an average of around 200% return on investment, with his Sunday Million figures running at around 275% - a truly incredible figure considering the field size and standard of this particular tournament.
Jeff has also had limited success on other sites. He has notable results on both UltimateBet and FullTilt (where he goes under the alias “GrampaJeff”). He has cashed for over $70,000 on UltimateBet, taking down numerous four-figure cashes. Perhaps his greatest achievement outside of PokerStars was winning the $50,000 guaranteed $100 freezeout on FullTilt for a wallet busting $15,190 (and the priceless feeling of winning every chip in the tournament, of course).
What makes all of these results even more surprising is that Jeff is not a professional player. Jeff continues to work in IT sales despite his string of high stakes results – some would consider this odd considering he clearly could derive his sole income from playing poker. This also explains the small volume of tournaments that he plays in compared to other players with similar results. We can only wonder at what Jeff could achieve if he started playing the high volume workload that many of the top online players take on
Live poker seems to a different world to Jeff – he has only cashed for around $4,000 in live tournaments of note. The best of these results is taking down $2,273 for 10th in the World Poker Tour Pot Limit Holdem Event 11 this year. Hopefully these results can be improved upon as Jeff’s poker progresses in the coming years. One thing is certain - considering the limited volume of tournaments he plays compared to his massive wins he has an obvious talent which should enable him to take down tournaments anywhere.
Jeff has written an excellent article for Bluff about the profitability of pre-flop stealing in tournaments that is well worth a read.
He also writes a blog called 'The Road Less Traveled' that is not just about poker but also addresses his twin passions of fishing and off-roading.
