Fourth Supernova Elite At PokerStars
23 October 2007
I realised that I was making more than I would at a normal job so I decided to give it a go
US player Jared Hubbard aka "jhub3000" is the latest player to accumulate enough FPPs on Stars to get Supernova Elite status...
There are only four of them in the world and the latest entrant to the ranks of the PokerStars Supernova Elite is a player from Minnesota who calls himself “jhub3000”.If you want to know just how much online poker you need to play to reach this landmark just look at jhub3000’s Sharkscope figures. So far he has played over 28,000 Sit n Go’s (SNGs) on PokerStars. His average stake is $109 and on average he makes $6 for every single one played. It doesn’t sound like much but it certainly mounts up as it translates into an overall career profit of just over $183,000.
If you go to his blog you will find he has given a few more details about the level of commitment needed to become a Supernova Elite.
So far this year he has played for 1,539 hours on online poker which works out at just over 40 hours a week. His profit on the SNGs is almost $123,000, with bonuses of $73,000, giving a total profit so far of getting on for $200,000. Now, this isn’t a bad living by anyone’s standards, nevermind a twentysomething living in the middle of nowhere.
Hubbard gets a lot of flak for playing so much but when you consider he does this for a living and only plays on average 40 hours a week he has no trouble answering his critics.
Recently jhub3000 got chatboxed by a fellow SNG player called clarkatroid, who said, among many other insults, that “You suck at life and only make average money” and “You have no life and are chained to your computer 24/7”.
In his blog he has a good comeback: “Yeah, you're absolutely correct. Clearly $180-$210/hr is pretty average these days. It's nowhere near average for the United States. It's nowhere near average for Minnesota. It's nowhere near average for Winona. It's nowhere near average for poker players. It's nowhere near average for SNG players. Need I go on?” Touche, as they say…
Asked recently on the PokerStars Blog how he got into poker Hubbard said he used to occasionally play with friends but then tore his achilles tendon, was laid up in bed, and needed something to do at the weekends.
He started up a play money account in the Spring 2005, did extremely well and decided to make a real money deposit.
He says: “I deposited $50 and never looked back. I started at $1 & $2 SNGs. I made some money but nothing big. Then I read some books and switched to cash games. That's when I really started doing well. I played mostly NL holdem and some Omaha H/L. I went from site to site and probably played on about seven sites. Finally, in the fall of 2005 I switched back to SNGs, except this time I played 6 max SNGs since that is what I had been playing most recently in cash.”
He says he immediately did extremely well and when he found out he was getting laid off from his college job he started up an Excel spreadsheet to calculate his hourly rate to see if he could do it as a job.
“I realised that I was making more than I would at a normal job so I decided to give it a go,” he says.
With over 1 million Frequent Player Points accumulated so far on PokerStars this year he is well on his way to “doing a Dario” and could end up, like the young Italian, with a brand new Porsche Cayman ‘S’.
