Jeff Goes To Vegas Part 3

After a dodgy start and a steady middle, in this third and final part of Jeff's Vegas '07 trilogy he tells us how it ended....

"$500 quickly became $2,000 thanks to a flopped set of threes and my second internet hand of the night"

Having had a shot at a WSOP bracelet and come close to taking down a big tournament at the Venetian my last few days in Vegas saw me ensconced in the Bellagio, either in their amazing card room or the Fontana lounge for the nightly $1000 freezeouts that Dave seemed to own.

In that time there were two particular hands I would like to share with you.

My first attempt playing the tournament saw my stack swell from 5,000 to 15,000 thanks to a pocket pair of Kings surviving against a straight-flush draw and then a flopped set cracking an overpair. However shortly afterwards, what can only be described as an ‘internet hand’ saw me get knocked out. The chip leader with about 40,000 who was very aggressive opened for 1,500 (blinds 200 – 400), a player to his left called sitting behind about 30,000 chips as did I on the button with 88. Flop 789. Chip leader bet 6,000 and the pre-flop caller immediately pushed all-in. I had a difficult decision to make as I knew that the all-in player knew that the chip leader was ultra aggressive and it was quite possible he was protecting a hand such as TT, JJ, or A9 or semi-bluffing with something like QT. Although JT for the flopped straight was a distinct possibility I doubted he would have played it so fast with no flush draw on the board and a total bluff was not out of the question either.

In any event I reasoned that even if held the straight I could still win he pot should the board pair to give me a full house. As I called the chip leader began to ponder and soon stuck his chips in and an absolute monster pot had developed of about 90,000 chips when the average was about 15,000.

Although my worst fears were confirmed when the first player revealed JT the chip leader's’ hand crushed all hope I had when he showed 98, taking away most of my outs. No miracles followed and I ventured back to the cash game where $500 quickly became $2,000 thanks to a flopped set of threes and my second ‘internet hand’ of the night.

Thankfully this time I was on the right end of it. Holding K7s and having called a raise I should not have done from the small blind the flop was a fairly reasonable KK7. That was only where my luck began though. I quickly checked as did the big blind. The original raiser simply pushed his whole stack into the middle (about $300) with QQ. I called desperately hoping that the big blind would follow suit. In fact, she immediately moved all-in for about $800 having slow-played AK. Naturally I called with the nuts and nothing brutal followed. Sometimes poker is just an easy game I guess…
