"Every time I play this tournament I swear never to play it again but for some reason keep finding myself back there."£50 Cash Game
I made the trip down to the Gutshot on Wednesday night with Poker Verdict’s Javed Ghazi. We were just in time for the £50 cash table opening up, and I sat down with £100. There’s nothing much to report aside from Anthony Tran who likes to play any two cards was raising every couple of hands, and the fact that I wasn’t connecting with any cards.
My stack whittled down rapidly and left me in desperate need to win a pot. I called a limit raise on my BB with
. The flop came

giving me middle pair and the second nut flush draw - I checked knowing that the aggressive table would do all the betting. The guy in early position bet out £20 and Anthony (who will call anything) made the call. I pushed my £70 into the middle. The original post flop bettor called and Anthony folded. I looked over to see
, and no clubs on the turn or river - making my pair of tens no good against top pair with top kicker.
£75 Freezeout
I decided to head upstairs, order myself some food, and buy into the dealer dealt £75 freezeout where I was seated with Javed to my left! Both Javed and I had a horrendous first level – with both our stacks going below 2k after starting with 3.5k.
I can only remember winning one decent pot on the first table, and, by the time the blinds hit 100/200, I had been moved to a different table, short stacked with only 1800.
I was sitting more comfortably by the time the blinds went up to 150/300 as I had earlier secured a double up with my pocket twos. However, it all went wrong when an aggressive player in mid position made it 600 to go on my SB. I looked down at
and called along with the BB. The flop came

– I checked, the BB checked and mid position pushed.
I insta called, though, unfortunately for me, he was on a massive draw with
. When the turn came
, I was looking for a king or ten to knock him out. No such luck and I was short stacked again.
A few hands later I was in late position with
when the same loose player mentioned before made it 600. I flat called. Everyone else folded, and the flop came

. He bet 1100 – two thirds of the pot. The way he bet, the amount he bet, and the range of hands he was raising with in bad positions made me believe my sevens were good. I moved all in for an extra £2k to him. He called, showing
. The turn and river were no help for me and I was sent to the rails.
£10 Re-Buy
My luck didn’t improve much later on it the week, and tired after a long week at work I decided to play the £10 rebuy at the Gutshot on Friday night.
Every time I play this tournament I swear never to play it again but for some reason keep finding myself back there.
As usual I sat on a table with a bunch of beginners and a few well known faces. I ended up rebuying seven times, which meant I needed to come better then 4th to get my money back!
I kept on getting my money in the middle and couldn’t win a hand! I was out soon after the break – a complete waste of a Friday night and £70!
$250 Satellite
It’s the Blackpool leg of the GUKPT this week and I really want to play, though I’d have to win a seat in order to do so. I’m not willing to pay the £1,000 buy in unless I get some backers or get a good win this week!
On Sunday night I played in the $250 satellite on Blue Sq with 63 runners and 5 seats up for grabs. I got off to a great start and managed to get my stack over 8,000 in the first level, having started with 1500.
Everything was looking good until I suffered two consecutive bad beats. The first dented my chip lead slightly, when JP Kelly outdrew my
with his
, but it wasn’t till the next hand that I got into trouble.
With
in my SB, one player limped in early position. I raised five times the BB, and the BB folded. The limper called and the flop came

. I bet the pot and the limper pushed for 2.5k. I called and saw his
. Before I even got a chance to see how much of a favourite I was, an
came on the turn.
I was still in okay shape with about an average stack of 3.5k but the next level was very up and down and finally, with my stack below average, I got
on my SB. JP limped UTG and I raised four times the BB. The BB pushed, followed by JP who had us covered, and I called but regretted instantly as I looked no good against JP’s
and my hopes of playing in the Blackpool main event were crushed.
