Dead Mans Hand

Two pairs - Aces and Eights.

Deuce

A two which is the lowest rank card in high poker.

Deuces

A pair of two's. Aka 'Ducks'.

Dominated Hand

A situation where the hands of two players have a common card such as an ace but the dominated hand's other card is of a lower rank eg where A-K comes up against A-Q, the A-Q is dominated.

Dominating Hand

A situation where the hands of two players have a common card such as an ace but the dominating hand's other card is of a higher rank eg K-Q v K-J , K-Q is dominating.

Double Belly Buster

Two shots at an inside straight draw. For example, someone with pocket cards of J-10 after a flop of A-Q-8 is now drawing to an inside straight with either a 9 or a King.

Draw

Needing another card to come on the turn or river to complete your hand, for example a player holding 8h-9h after a flop of 2h-2s-6h has a draw to a flush.

Drawing Dead

A drawing hand that will lose even if it hits its draw.

Drawing Hand

Any hand which contains a draw.

Ducks

A pair of 2s aka 'Deuces'.

Dwell Up

To think long and hard about a difficult decision.

Early Position

Position on a round of betting where the player must act before most of the other players at the table.

Fifth Street

Also known as the 'River' - the fifth and final community card dealt in flop games, or the last card dealt in non-flop games.

Fourth Street

Also known as the 'Turn' - the fourth card dealt after the three from the flop.

Flop

The flop is the first three community cards dealt in Texas holdem and Omaha.

Flush

When all five cards in your hand are of a common suit. A flush ranks between a straight and a full house.

Flush Draw

A hand that is drawing to a flush.

Fold

The act of throwing your hand away when its your turn aka to 'muck'.

Four of a Kind

A hand consisting of four cards of the same rank, a very strong hand that is higher than a full-house and can only be beaten by a straight flush aka 'quads'.

Freeroll

A multi-table tournament that is free to enter but still has a real money prize pool.

Freezeout

A tournament where once you lose your starting chips you are out (no rebuys or add-ons).

Full House

A strong hand that ranks between a flush and four of a kind consisting of three of a kind and a pair aka 'boat' or 'full boat'.

Gay Waiter

Pocket cards of Q-3 (Queen with a 'trey').

Gutshot

An inside straight draw aka 'belly buster'.

Heads-up

One-on-one poker.

High/low

A game variation where half the pot goes to the player with the best hand and the other half goes to the player showing the worst hand.

Hooks

Pocket Jacks aka 'fish-hooks'.

Hole Cards

The cards dealt face down to each player at the beginning of a hand (two to each player in hold’em, four to each player in Omaha etc. No other player can see these cards.

Hollywood

When a player pretends to be in deep thought to try and make his opponent think his hand is either stronger or weaker than it actually is. The player is deemed to be acting out a genuine dwell-up - hence the name.

Implied Odds

The amount of money you expect to win if you make your hand as a percentage of the amount of cash it will cost you to continue playing.

Initial Pot

The sum of the blinds and antes (if any) before the betting starts.

Inside Straight

Four cards which require another between the top and the bottom card to complete a straight, aka 'gutshot' or 'belly buster'.

Kicker

If a player makes a pair with one of his hole cards, the other is called the kicker. If another players holds the same pair, the highest kicker wins the pot.

Late Position

Position on a round of betting where the player must act after most of the other players have acted , usually on or next to the button

Ladies

Pocket Queens aka 'Siegfired & Roy', 'Hilton sisters' or even 'bitches'.

Level

A period of time where the blinds do not increase.

Limit

Betting is made in specified increments.

Limit Poker

A structured poker game that uses fixed limits on betting and raising per round. Limit poker games require specific bet amounts.

Limp In

To enter the pot by calling the big blind rather than raising it.

Live Hand

A hand that has not been folded or mucked, or a hand with many outs remaining.
